Say you’re driving a car and you get to a hill that is a distance of 1 mile from the base to the top and another mile back down the other side. Yeah, nature is symmetric like that. You drive up to the top at 30 mph and then wonder how fast you’d have to drive (ignore acceleration – figure the average) to get to the bottom with a total average of 60mph going from one side of the hill to the other; 2 miles.
